So like everybody I guess, my first thought was to be amazed that in a society that reaches for the stars (or at least several other asteroids close by) it was impossible for dupes to keep their food in a freezer. No, fridge only!
So when I started (about a month or so ago now?) I read about different ways to get 'infinite food storage'. From the basic food pit to the vacuum by naphta both covered in this guide (and by the way, by cycle 600 I still did not have naphta... I had crude oil, that might have worked) (the pictures are theirs)
The kitchen filled with chlorine was a good one here (the picture is theirs), but still a bit difficult at the beginning when one does not have access to atmo suits. Its an interesting design, but then again I do not yet have access to visco gel... although in that particular case the modded vacuum door might help. I might try something like that, but since dupes try and deliver food directly to the machines, I would have to rearrange some things around... but its an interesting concept.
So I tried the Easy Kitchen way (the picture is theirs) - My hydrogen went down to -50C but it was not enough to refrigerate the food.
So I went with the automated kitchen guide (the picture is theirs) - I encountered the same problem with the temperature not getting low enough on the tile. This is where I learned the very important lesson about insulated and radiant pipes. And that I did not have the metal I needed to make this work.
By that time, I think I had parts of my kitchen under vacuum at least 4 or 5 times, and getting rid of the water air lock was not fun. But I sure learned how to make them!
In the end, I downloaded a freezer mod. Because that should be part of the base game 😂 And the art is kind of cute, I like it. I also found Dupes Refrigeration and a cool pod, because one cute freezer is not always enough and you need to spice a dupe's day with choice!
They do not offer sterile atmospheric condition (apart from the one for the small food box to fit into the Space Module), so in the end the the Invisible Facility's facility kitchen and great hall ended looking like this, trapping CO2 where the freezer is, and only the auto sweeper could access it. The dupes would deliver mushrooms or sleet wheat directly to the machines, and the pacu fillets & meat was delivered via shipping directly from the ranches.
I believe that egg must have been shipped from the other asteroid and took a wrong turn, I had a pacu flopping there for 25 cycles...
And currently but only temporarily, the Transdimensionnal Citadel's kitchenette attached to the pacu farm. It only works because the fridge ends empty or close to at the end of the day so food does not spoil. It's adapted from the Pacu Farming for Dummies.
I will eventually find a system that I will feel comfortable with, differing early game and further on depending on what my research have unlocked, but I do like experimenting with that particular room. There are quite a lot of possibilities!
